A 1756 portrait of Amsterdam brewer Pieter Nicolaas Rendorp by the Dutch painter Tibout Regters.
This portrait by Tibout Regters depicts Pieter Nicolaas Rendorp, a Dutch brewer from Amsterdam. Painted in 1756, the work captures the subject in a half-length pose, set within a painted archway that provides a sense of depth. Regters, a painter active in the mid-eighteenth century, was known for his ability to render the textures of clothing and the subtle expressions of his sitters.
Rendorp is shown wearing a red coat trimmed with dark fur, layered over a waistcoat featuring delicate red floral embroidery. The attention to the fabric details reflects the fashion of the Dutch merchant class during this period. His powdered wig and composed expression suggest a man of status and professional standing. The lighting is focused on the face, drawing the viewer's attention to the sitter's features, while the background remains in shadow to maintain the focus on the figure.
The composition is typical of eighteenth-century portraiture, where the subject is presented with a degree of formality. The brushwork is controlled, allowing for the precise depiction of the lace at the neck and the embroidery on the waistcoat. This piece offers a glimpse into the social history of Amsterdam, documenting the appearance and attire of a member of the city's brewing industry. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, where it is catalogued as part of their extensive holdings of Dutch portraiture. The work remains a clear example of the portrait style favoured by the Dutch bourgeoisie in the mid-1700s, prioritising clarity and a realistic representation of the individual.
