Mattia Preti, nicknamed *Il Cavalier Calabrese* after his native Calabria, was an Italian Baroque painter who lived and worked throughout Italy and Malta. Though often overshadowed by contemporaries like Bernini and Caravaggio, Preti’s dynamic compositions and masterful use of *chiaroscuro* earned him significant recognition in his own time and a lasting place in art history. He was, unusually, knighted into the Order of Saint John, which speaks to his reputation and standing during his lifetime. Preti's early career saw him working alongside his brother Gregorio in Rome, where he was exposed to the work of Caravaggio and his followers. This influence is evident in Preti's dramatic lighting and realistic figures. Later, he spent considerable time in Naples, where he absorbed the local artistic traditions and further developed his unique style. His most famous works include the frescoes he painted for the gates of Naples, an important commission reflecting his popularity. In his later years, Preti moved to Malta, where he continued to produce paintings for churches and private patrons. His work can be found in the Co-Cathedral of St. John in Valletta, a testament to his enduring legacy.
