A traditional ink wash painting on silk featuring a pine tree, bamboo, grapevines, and a squirrel in a vertical composition.
This hanging scroll presents a traditional East Asian ink wash composition, focusing on the interplay between flora and fauna. The work features a gnarled pine tree as the central vertical element, its textured bark rendered through layered ink washes. A grapevine winds around the trunk, with clusters of fruit hanging amidst the pine needles. At the base, bamboo stalks provide a sharp, linear contrast to the organic curves of the tree and vine.
A squirrel is positioned near the roots, partially obscured by the foliage. The artist employs a monochromatic palette, using varying concentrations of ink to suggest depth and texture. The brushwork ranges from the precise, dark strokes defining the bamboo leaves to the softer, diffused washes that create the pine needles and the squirrel's fur. This technique relies on the control of water and pigment to convey the essence of the subjects rather than a literal representation.
The composition follows the vertical format typical of hanging scrolls, guiding the eye from the ground level up to the canopy. The surrounding silk mount, decorated with a repeating gold pattern, frames the image and provides a formal border. Such works often draw upon the symbolic associations of these elements: the pine represents longevity, bamboo signifies resilience, and the squirrel is frequently depicted in contexts of abundance or playfulness. The absence of colour focuses the viewer on the quality of the line and the balance of the composition. This print captures the tonal range of the original ink work, preserving the subtle transitions between light and shadow that define the style.
