Thomas Hill, a member of the later generation of the Hudson River School, produced this work in 1876. The painting depicts the dramatic topography of Yosemite Valley, a subject that occupied much of his career. Hill utilised a technique that balances the monumental scale of the granite cliffs with the quiet activity of the figures in the foreground.

The composition is anchored by the towering verticality of the valley walls, which frame the central waterfall. The light source appears to originate from behind the clouds, casting a soft, diffused glow across the rock faces and the river below. Hill employed a palette of warm earth tones, ochres, and muted greens to convey the atmosphere of the Sierra Nevada. The foreground features two figures identified as Piute individuals, positioned by the riverbank. Their presence provides a sense of scale against the vast geological features of the valley.

This work reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in the American West, where artists documented the terrain for an audience largely unfamiliar with the region. Hill's approach to the subject is characterised by a focus on atmospheric effects and the interplay between light and shadow.
