Description

A detailed photographic study of plaster models for the allegorical sculptures La Guerre and La Paix at the Palais du Louvre, captured by Édouard Denis Baldus.

This photograph by Édouard Denis Baldus captures two plaster models intended for the sculptural programme of the Palais du Louvre in Paris. The left figure, representing La Guerre (War), is the work of sculptor Augustin Alexandre Dumont, while the right figure, representing La Paix (Peace), is by Antoine Etex. These models were part of the extensive decorative scheme commissioned during the mid-nineteenth century to unify the architecture of the Louvre and the Tuileries.

Baldus was a prominent figure in the documentation of French architectural heritage. His work often involved the systematic recording of public monuments and construction projects. In this image, the two allegorical figures are presented with clarity against a neutral background, allowing for an examination of their form and the symbolic attributes associated with them. The figure of War is accompanied by military gear, including a helmet and arrows, while the figure of Peace is surrounded by objects denoting prosperity and industry. The presence of numbered tags on the models indicates their status as objects under review or cataloguing within the studio or workshop environment.

The composition is balanced and precise, reflecting the technical rigour Baldus applied to his architectural subjects. By isolating these sculptures from their eventual architectural context, the photograph functions as a record of the creative process behind the grand decorative projects of the Second Empire. The print retains the subtle tonal range characteristic of the salted paper process, which was frequently employed by photographers of the period to achieve a soft, matte finish. This image provides a view into the intersection of nineteenth-century sculpture and the emerging medium of photography as a tool for historical documentation.
