A hand-coloured engraving from John James Audubon's *Birds of America*, depicting a male wild turkey amidst bamboo-like plants. This print showcases Audubon's skill as both a scientist and an artist.
John James Audubon's *Birds of America* is one of the most ambitious ornithological studies ever undertaken. Published as a series of hand-coloured engravings between 1827 and 1838, the complete set comprises 435 life-size prints depicting nearly 500 species. Audubon's project aimed to document all known birds of North America in their natural habitats, a task he approached with scientific precision and artistic flair. His detailed observations of avian anatomy and behaviour, combined with his skill as a draughtsman, resulted in images of exceptional accuracy and beauty. Plate 1 features the wild turkey (Meleagris gallopavo), a species native to North America. The male turkey is shown in full plumage, its feathers rendered in shades of brown, black, and white. The bird stands amidst a thicket of bamboo-like plants, its alert posture suggesting a sense of vigilance. Audubon's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the texture of the feathers, the scales on the legs, and the subtle gradations of colour in the bird's head and neck. The composition is carefully balanced, with the turkey's form offset by the surrounding foliage.
