The work depicts the Northern Cardinal, identified here by its historical nomenclature, Cardinal Grosbeak. Audubon utilised a combination of watercolour, pastel, and pencil for his original studies, which were subsequently translated into copper plates by the engraver Robert Havell Jr. in London.

The composition presents a male and female cardinal perched upon branches of the Wild Almond tree. Audubon departed from the static, profile-based conventions of earlier natural history illustration. Instead, he rendered his subjects in active, lifelike poses, often incorporating the specific flora associated with the bird's habitat. The male bird is shown in profile, displaying the characteristic crest and vivid plumage, while the female is positioned below, exhibiting more muted, earthy tones that provide a contrast to the male's appearance.
