A hand-coloured engraving by John James Audubon, Plate 27, *Red-headed Woodpecker* depicts several woodpeckers around a decaying tree trunk. This print combines scientific accuracy with artistic skill, showcasing the birds' natural behaviour and plumage.
John James Audubon (1785-1851) was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter, notable for his expansive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations that depicted the birds in their natural habitats. His major work, *The Birds of America*, is a collection of 435 life-size prints, made from hand-engraved plates, and is still a standard reference for ornithologists and art collectors. Plate 27, titled *Red-headed Woodpecker*, presents a group of these birds interacting around a decaying tree trunk. One bird is in mid-flight, approaching the trunk, while others are perched on the tree, some appearing to feed from holes in the wood. The composition is carefully arranged to display the birds' plumage and behaviour, set against a plain background that isolates the subjects for scientific observation. Audubon's work combines scientific accuracy with artistic skill, capturing the vitality of the birds within their environment.
