Audubon (1785-1851) was an American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter, notable for his expansive studies documenting all types of American birds and for his detailed illustrations, which present the birds in their natural habitats. *Birds of America* consists of 435 life-size prints, made from hand-engraved plates, and is considered one of the greatest achievements in American art and ornithology. The prints were originally issued in series between 1827 and 1838. In this particular image, two cliff swallows are perched near their distinctive mud nests, which are built on a cliff face. One swallow is in flight, while the other is perched on a nest. The nests are clustered together, suggesting the communal nesting habits of these birds.
