A fine etching by Jean-Honoré Fragonard depicting a mythological dance of satyrs and nymphs, rendered with fluid lines and Rococo charm.
This etching by Jean-Honoré Fragonard captures a scene of mythological revelry. The composition centres on a satyr and a nymph, accompanied by small satyr children, engaged in a lively dance. The figures are positioned against a rectangular stone block, which acts as a frame within the frame, while dense, sketch-like foliage surrounds the scene. Fragonard employs a light, fluid line quality that characterises his graphic work, allowing the figures to appear in motion against the static, textured background of the stone and surrounding vegetation.
Fragonard, a master of the French Rococo, produced this work during a period when he explored themes of pastoral fantasy and classical mythology. The etching demonstrates his ability to translate the spontaneity of his drawings into the print medium. The satyr, with his goat-like features and horns, holds a child, while the nymph dances with a tambourine, her drapery caught in the movement of the scene. A decorative urn, adorned with a grotesque mask, sits to the left, adding to the classical atmosphere of the composition.
The work is part of a series of etchings that reflect the artist's interest in the playful, often eroticised nature of the Rococo period. The contrast between the clean, open space of the central stone block and the chaotic, dark hatching of the surrounding foliage creates a sense of depth and focus. This print offers a glimpse into the artist's private creative process, where classical subjects are treated with a sense of whimsy and technical freedom. It remains a fine example of eighteenth-century French printmaking, showing the artist's skill in balancing narrative detail with atmospheric texture.
