A minimalist lithographic plate from Alberto Burri's 1955 portfolio, featuring delicate calligraphic lines and subtle textures on a stark white field.
This work is a lithographic plate from the 1955 portfolio titled 17 variazioni su temi proposti per una pura ideologia fonetica. Alberto Burri, an Italian artist known for his radical approach to materiality, produced this series during a period of intense experimentation with form and space. Unlike his more famous works involving burlap, tar, or burnt plastic, this piece demonstrates his mastery of line and negative space on a two-dimensional surface.
The composition is sparse, focusing on a delicate web of fine, calligraphic lines that occupy only the right side of the page. These lines appear to converge and dissipate, creating a sense of movement that is both controlled and spontaneous. Small, circular marks punctuate the linear network, providing a tactile quality that echoes the artist's interest in physical texture. The stark contrast between the empty white space on the left and the concentrated activity on the right creates a balance that is characteristic of Burri's minimalist sensibilities.
Burri's work often rejects traditional representation in favour of an exploration of the medium itself. In this print, the ink sits upon the paper with a precision that suggests a deliberate, almost scientific, investigation into the nature of the mark. The work avoids decorative excess, relying instead on the tension between the void and the gestural line. It is a clear example of the artist's ability to convey weight and presence through minimal means. This print offers a view into the graphic side of Burri's practice, showing how his preoccupation with the physical properties of materials translated into the medium of printmaking. It remains a quiet, contemplative piece that invites close observation of its subtle variations in line weight and placement.
