A refined Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicting women enjoying music and socialising on a pleasure boat along the Sumida River.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi captures a scene of leisure on the Sumida River. The composition is divided into two panels, depicting a group of women aboard a pleasure boat. The figures are rendered with the elongated, graceful proportions characteristic of Eishi's work, reflecting his transition from a painter of the Kano school to a master of the Ukiyo-e genre.
On the left, three women engage in musical performance, with one playing the shamisen and another holding a small drum. Their postures are relaxed, suggesting an atmosphere of refined social gathering. On the right, the scene shifts to more intimate interactions, with figures adjusting their attire or attending to one another. The architectural elements of the boat, including the roof and the draped curtains, frame the figures, creating a sense of enclosure against the backdrop of the river.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft ochres, muted greys, and subtle ink tones. This choice of colour allows the focus to remain on the fluid lines of the kimonos and the expressive gestures of the subjects. Eishi was known for his depictions of courtly life and the inhabitants of the pleasure districts, often imbuing his subjects with a sense of quiet dignity. The print demonstrates the technical precision of the period, with clear outlines and balanced spacing across the two sheets. By focusing on the social dynamics of the boat, the artist provides a glimpse into the recreational habits of Edo-period society, where music and conversation were central to the experience of river travel.
