A detailed 1849 oil painting by Rosa Bonheur, capturing a team of oxen at work in the French countryside with technical precision.
Rosa Bonheur, a French painter known for her precise observation of animals, completed this work in 1849. The painting depicts a team of oxen pulling a plough through the soil of the Nivernais region. Bonheur spent significant time studying the anatomy and movement of livestock, which is evident in the muscular rendering of the animals. The composition is horizontal, drawing the eye across the field as the team moves from left to right.
The foreground shows the freshly turned earth, rendered with textured brushwork that contrasts with the smooth, expansive sky above. The figures of the farmers are integrated into the scene, working alongside the oxen. Bonheur avoids romanticising the rural labour, choosing instead to focus on the physical reality of the task. The light is clear and even, suggesting a bright day in the French countryside.
This work was commissioned by the French government and gained immediate recognition for its technical skill. It reflects the mid-nineteenth-century interest in rural life and the dignity of agricultural work. The attention to detail, from the harness equipment to the varied coats of the oxen, demonstrates Bonheur's dedication to her subject matter. The painting remains a primary example of her ability to combine scientific accuracy with a composed, narrative structure.
