This ink wash painting by the Korean scholar-official Yi Yu-won (1814-1888) captures a flowering plum branch with economy and precision. The work belongs to the literati tradition of the late Joseon period, where the plum blossom served as a symbol of resilience and moral integrity. Because the plum blooms in late winter, it is often associated with the scholar who maintains virtue despite harsh conditions.
The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, saturated ink of the main trunk and the lighter, more delicate washes used for the smaller twigs and blossoms. Yi Yu-won employs a calligraphic approach to the brushwork, where each stroke conveys the physical weight and texture of the wood. The branch extends across the paper in a diagonal trajectory, creating a sense of movement that is balanced by the vertical column of calligraphy on the left side. The negative space surrounding the branch is not merely an absence of detail, but a deliberate choice to focus the viewer on the form and gesture of the plant.
