A fine example of Ming Dynasty cursive script calligraphy by Wen Peng, featuring fluid brushwork and rhythmic composition.
This work by Wen Peng, a prominent figure of the Ming Dynasty, displays the fluid and expressive nature of cursive script calligraphy. Wen Peng was the eldest son of the celebrated artist Wen Zhengming, and he maintained the family tradition of scholarly excellence in both painting and writing. His approach to the brush is characterised by a rhythmic quality, where the speed and pressure of the ink application create a sense of motion across the paper surface.
The text, titled 'Poem on Promulgating the Almanac at New Year’s', reflects the cultural practices of the period, where the distribution of the imperial calendar was a significant event marking the transition into the new year. The characters are executed with a confident, sweeping hand, demonstrating the artist's mastery over the brush. The ink tones vary from deep, saturated blacks to lighter, more translucent washes, providing a visual texture that complements the poetic content.
In Chinese calligraphic tradition, the act of writing is considered an extension of the artist's character and mental state. Wen Peng's work here is not merely a transcription of text, but a performance of energy and balance. The composition is vertical, following the traditional format of a hanging scroll, with the characters arranged in columns that flow downwards. This piece offers a glimpse into the refined aesthetic values of the Ming literati, who prioritised personal expression and technical skill within the constraints of classical forms. The paper, aged to a warm, neutral tone, provides a subtle background that allows the dark ink to remain the primary focus of the viewer's attention.
