A chaotic composition of figures, symbols, and text rendered in bold, gestural strokes. 'Poison Oasis' exemplifies Basquiat's distinctive style and urban roots.
Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960-1988) was an American artist of Haitian and Puerto Rican descent. Basquiat's art emerged from the New York City graffiti subculture of the late 1970s, rapidly achieving international recognition in the 1980s. His style combined raw, gestural painting with graffiti-like symbols and text, often addressing themes of race, identity, and social critique. He died of a drug overdose at the age of 27. His work continues to be celebrated for its energy and unique perspective. 'Poison Oasis' exemplifies Basquiat's distinctive style. The painting features a chaotic composition of figures, symbols, and text rendered in bold, gestural strokes. A central, skeletal figure stands prominently, surrounded by arrows, cryptic writing, and animalistic forms, including a snake and a bull's skull. The colour palette is a mix of yellows, reds, and blues, applied in a seemingly spontaneous manner. The overall effect is one of raw energy and urban grit, reflecting Basquiat's roots in street art and his engagement with contemporary social issues.
