A detailed botanical engraving by Maria Sibylla Merian, depicting a chilli pepper plant alongside its associated insect life, from her 1705 study of Surinamese nature.
This plate originates from Maria Sibylla Merian's seminal work, Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium, first published in Amsterdam in 1705. Merian, a naturalist and scientific illustrator, travelled to the Dutch colony of Suriname in 1699 to document the life cycles of insects in their natural habitats. This expedition was unusual for the period, as it involved a woman travelling independently for scientific research. The composition depicts the Poivre d'inde, or chilli pepper plant, alongside various stages of insect development. Merian captures the plant with scientific precision, showing the leaves, flowers, and fruit in different states of maturity. The inclusion of a butterfly and a caterpillar demonstrates her interest in metamorphosis, a subject she studied throughout her career. By presenting the insect and its host plant together, she moved away from the traditional practice of illustrating specimens in isolation, choosing instead to show the ecological relationships between species. The engraving technique allows for fine detail, which is further defined by the application of hand-applied colour. The palette remains grounded in natural tones, with the deep reds of the peppers contrasted against the green foliage and the blue markings of the butterfly. The work reflects the scientific curiosity of the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, where the classification of the natural world became a primary pursuit for scholars and artists alike. This print offers a view into the intersection of art and early entomology, documenting species with a level of observation that remains relevant to modern botanical study.
