This work is a detail from the celebrated Farnese Gallery ceiling in Rome, a project that defined the trajectory of Baroque painting. Annibale Carracci depicts the Cyclops Polyphemus, a figure from Ovid's Metamorphoses, in a moment of intense physical exertion. The giant is shown preparing to hurl a massive rock at the fleeing lovers, Acis and Galatea.

Carracci employs a muscular, heroic anatomy that draws heavily from the influence of Michelangelo. The figure of Polyphemus occupies the foreground, his body twisted in a dynamic contrapposto that conveys both weight and movement. The artist uses a palette of earthy tones, contrasted against the pale, luminous skin of the figures and the distant blue of the sea. The composition is carefully balanced, with the aggressive posture of the Cyclops set against the desperate retreat of the lovers.

Technically, the fresco demonstrates Carracci's mastery of foreshortening and anatomical precision. The musculature is rendered with a sculptural quality, giving the giant a tangible presence within the pictorial space. The inclusion of the pan pipes, slung across the giant's shoulder, serves as a narrative detail, referencing his unrequited love for the sea nymph Galatea.
