A sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting Polish heralds and musicians on horseback, showcasing the period's interest in foreign costume.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts Polish heralds and musicians, reflecting the sixteenth-century European fascination with foreign customs and exotic attire. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver and publisher based in Antwerp, produced numerous series documenting the dress of various nations. These works provided contemporary audiences with visual records of distant cultures, often circulating as part of larger costume books.
The composition features two distinct scenes. On the left, a trumpeter and a companion are shown mounted on horseback, dressed in elaborate garments with tall, plumed headgear. The figures are rendered with precise lines, capturing the texture of their robes and the musculature of the horses. The right side of the print shows a partial view of another mounted figure, also playing a wind instrument, though the paper exhibits significant loss and degradation. The Latin and German inscriptions at the base, 'Polonischer trommetter' and 'Tubicen Polonus', identify the subjects as Polish trumpeters.
Technically, the work demonstrates the characteristic clarity of late sixteenth-century engraving. De Bruyn employs a system of hatching and cross-hatching to define form and shadow, creating a sense of volume within the figures. The print serves as a historical document of the period's interest in ethnography and fashion. The surrounding paper shows signs of age and handling, which is common for prints of this era that were once bound in volumes. This piece offers a glimpse into the systematic documentation of European society during the Renaissance, where the visual classification of different peoples was a popular pursuit for collectors and scholars alike.
