LAVR. MED. F.' is visible at the top. Leo X, born Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici, reigned as Pope from 1513 to 1521. He is depicted wearing a red cap and cope trimmed with fur. The cope is fastened with a jeweled clasp. Bronzino's portrait captures the Pope's features with a degree of realism, while also conveying a sense of his status and authority.
