A refined eighteenth-century portrait by Dmitry Levitzky, capturing the subject in elegant lace attire with characteristic attention to texture and light.
Dmitry Levitzky, a master of the Russian portrait tradition during the eighteenth century, captures the likeness of A. A. Gubareva with technical precision. Levitzky was known for his ability to render textures, particularly the delicate lace and silk fabrics favoured by the Russian aristocracy. In this work, the subject is presented against a dark, atmospheric background, which directs the viewer's attention to her facial features and the elaborate details of her attire.
The sitter wears a high-collared garment featuring layered lace ruffles, which demonstrate the artist's skill in handling light and shadow. A double strand of pearls rests against her neck, providing a contrast to the cool tones of her blue dress. The powdered hair, styled in the fashion of the period, is adorned with a small floral accent, adding a touch of softness to the formal composition. Levitzky avoids excessive ornamentation, choosing instead to focus on the psychological presence of the sitter. His approach to portraiture often involved a careful balance between the representation of social status and the individual character of the subject.
Levitzky spent much of his career in Saint Petersburg, where he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts. His work reflects the influence of European portraiture, yet he maintained a distinct style that defined the aesthetic of the Russian court. This portrait provides a clear example of his method, where the interplay of light on fabric and the subtle modelling of the face create a sense of physical presence. The painting remains a representative example of the portraiture produced for the Russian nobility during the late eighteenth century, documenting the fashions and social expectations of the era through a refined, academic lens.
