A classic eighteenth-century equestrian portrait by James Seymour, depicting a rider and his horse in a formal, open-field setting.
James Seymour, a prominent figure in eighteenth-century British sporting art, produced this equestrian portrait in 1748. The composition follows the conventions of the period, placing the rider and his mount in a profile view against a low horizon line. This arrangement allows for a clear depiction of the horse's conformation, a priority for the sporting gentry of the era.
The rider, dressed in formal riding attire including a dark coat and tricorn hat, sits upright with a composed expression. His mount, a grey horse, is rendered with attention to its musculature and stance. A small hound accompanies them in the foreground, adding a sense of movement to the scene. The background features a simplified view of a country estate, a common motif in works commissioned by landowners to document their property and their animals.
Seymour was known for his focus on the anatomy of horses, a subject he studied closely throughout his career. His work often reflects the social status of his patrons, who valued these paintings as records of their sporting interests and personal achievements. The lighting in this piece is even, casting soft shadows that define the forms without excessive drama. The palette consists of muted earth tones, greens, and the soft grey of the horse, set against a sky that transitions from a warm sunset hue near the horizon to a cooler blue above. This print captures the technical precision and the specific aesthetic of the mid-eighteenth-century English school of animal painting.
