The sitter is positioned behind a stone parapet, a common device in Italian Renaissance portraiture to create a sense of physical presence and distance between the viewer and the subject. His hands rest upon the ledge, where he holds a small object, perhaps a writing tablet or a case, while additional rings lie on the surface before him.
