A 1506 portrait by Fra Bartolomeo, depicting Matthaeus Kastl with precise lines and a balanced, atmospheric background.
This portrait, dated 1506, depicts a man identified by the inscription as Matthaeus Kastl. The work displays the characteristic clarity of the Florentine school during the early sixteenth century. The subject is positioned in a three-quarter view, set against a pale, atmospheric sky that transitions into a distant, rolling horizon. Two slender trees frame the figure, providing a sense of verticality that balances the composition.
The sitter wears a dark tunic, contrasted by a soft, rose-coloured scarf draped loosely around his shoulders. His head is covered by a simple red cap, which draws attention to his facial features. The artist employs a precise, linear technique to define the contours of the face, nose, and jawline. The lighting is even, avoiding dramatic shadows in favour of a clear, descriptive approach to the sitter's appearance.
In the background, a small architectural structure is visible on the left, suggesting a rural setting. The inclusion of such details was common in portraiture of this period, often intended to provide context or hint at the sitter's origins. The inscription at the top of the panel, 'MATTHAEVS KASTLIVS OBIIT 1506', indicates that the portrait may have been completed in the year of the subject's death. This suggests the work functioned as a commemorative image. The painting reflects the transition from the rigid profiles of the fifteenth century to the more naturalistic, psychologically engaged portraits that would define the High Renaissance. The surface of the panel retains the subtle textures of the oil medium, allowing for the fine rendering of the fabric and the soft modelling of the skin. This print captures the precise detail and muted colour palette of the original panel, offering a clear view of the artist's technical control.
