A 1545 portrait by Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen, depicting a man of status holding a rosary, rendered with the precise detail typical of the Northern Renaissance.
This portrait, executed in 1545, depicts a mature man positioned behind a ledge, a common compositional device in Northern Renaissance painting. The subject wears a dark cap and a heavy fur-lined coat over a red garment, suggesting a person of significant social standing. His expression is serious and direct, with the artist capturing the textures of his skin and the weight of his clothing with precision.
In his left hand, the man holds a pair of gloves, while his right hand rests upon the ledge, clutching a rosary. The inclusion of the rosary provides a clear indication of the subject's religious devotion. The date 1545 and the age of the sitter, 63, are inscribed on the background, flanking his head. This practice of including biographical data was standard for portraiture of the period, providing a record of the individual at a specific moment in time.
Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen was a painter and tapestry designer from the Netherlands, known for his work in the service of the Habsburg court. His style reflects the influence of contemporary Flemish masters, characterised by a focus on material detail and a controlled, sober palette. The lighting in this work is even, avoiding dramatic shadows to ensure the features of the sitter remain the primary focus. The background is a muted, uniform green, which serves to push the figure forward, creating a sense of physical presence. This print captures the technical skill of the original panel painting, preserving the subtle gradations of colour and the careful rendering of the sitter's features. It is a representative example of mid-sixteenth-century portraiture, documenting the appearance and status of a man of the era.
