A refined Dutch Golden Age portrait by Pieter Cornelisz. van Slingelandt, featuring a man holding a pocket watch as a symbol of time.
This oval portrait by Pieter Cornelisz. van Slingelandt demonstrates the meticulous technique associated with the Leiden fijnschilders, or fine painters. Working on a copper support, the artist achieved a smooth, enamel-like finish that allowed for extreme precision in the rendering of textures and light. The subject is depicted in a loose, plum-coloured robe, holding a pocket watch, which serves as a traditional memento mori, reminding the viewer of the passage of time and the transience of human life.
The composition is tightly framed within an oval format, focusing attention on the sitter's expression and the specific details of his attire. Behind him, a classical column provides a sense of architectural structure, while a glimpse of a distant landscape suggests a setting beyond the immediate interior. Van Slingelandt was a pupil of Gerrit Dou, and this influence is apparent in the careful handling of the light, which catches the metallic surface of the watch and the soft folds of the fabric. The artist's signature, visible near the base of the column, confirms his authorship of this refined work.
Van Slingelandt was known for his slow, deliberate working method, often spending months on a single small-scale painting. This dedication to detail resulted in works that were highly prized by contemporary collectors for their technical virtuosity. The portrait captures a moment of quiet contemplation, with the sitter's steady gaze engaging directly with the viewer. The muted colour palette, dominated by deep tones and subtle highlights, contributes to the overall sense of gravity and composure. This piece offers an insight into the aesthetic preferences of the Dutch elite during the late seventeenth century, where personal portraits often combined individual likeness with symbolic objects to convey status, intellect, or philosophical reflection.
