A detailed watercolour and pencil portrait by British artist Samuel Daniell, capturing a Sri Lankan Tamil subject with observational precision.
This portrait by Samuel Daniell captures a subject with direct, observational precision. Daniell, a British artist known for his travels in Southern Africa and Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka), produced this work during his time in the region. The drawing employs a combination of graphite pencil and watercolour washes, a technique common among travelling artists of the early nineteenth century who required portable materials to document their surroundings.
The composition focuses on the head and shoulders of the sitter, who is depicted wearing a pale pink turban and a simple white garment. Daniell uses light, hatched pencil lines to suggest the form of the clothing and the surrounding space, allowing the paper to remain largely unworked. This approach directs the viewer's attention to the face, where the artist applies subtle watercolour tones to define the skin, dark hair, and moustache. The subject gazes away from the viewer, his expression neutral and composed.
Daniell's work reflects the period's interest in ethnographic documentation. His sketches often served as the basis for more formal prints intended for publication in travelogues or collections of regional studies. This specific portrait demonstrates his ability to balance technical accuracy with a sensitive rendering of individual features. The economy of line and the restrained use of colour are characteristic of his style, which prioritises clarity and observation over elaborate finish. By focusing on the specific details of the sitter's attire and physical appearance, the artist provides a record of the people he encountered during his expedition. The work remains a clear example of the documentary drawing practices prevalent in the early nineteenth century, offering a glimpse into the visual records compiled by British artists working abroad.
