A refined 1813 graphite portrait by Orest Kiprensky, depicting A. Tamilov in military uniform with precise shading and psychological depth.
This graphite portrait by Orest Kiprensky depicts A. Tamilov, a figure captured with the characteristic precision and psychological depth associated with the artist's work. Dated 1813 and inscribed with the location of Saint Petersburg, the drawing reflects the refined draughtsmanship that defined Kiprensky's career during the early nineteenth century. The sitter is shown in military attire, complete with epaulettes and a decorative order, suggesting his status within the Russian imperial hierarchy during the Napoleonic era.
Kiprensky employs a varied range of graphite marks to distinguish between textures. The soft, delicate shading of the face contrasts with the vigorous, dark strokes used to render the fur of the sitter's coat. This technical approach directs the viewer's attention to the subject's expression, which conveys a sense of introspection and quiet authority. The composition is balanced, with the sitter positioned in a three-quarter view that allows for a clear articulation of his features and uniform details. The background remains largely unworked, save for subtle diagonal hatching that provides a sense of space without distracting from the primary subject.
As a master of the Russian Romantic portrait, Kiprensky moved away from the rigid formality of earlier neoclassical styles. He favoured a more naturalistic approach, often imbuing his subjects with a sense of individual character and emotional presence. This drawing is a clear example of his ability to capture the essence of a person through economical means, relying on the interplay of light and shadow to define form. The work remains a fine example of Russian portraiture from the period, demonstrating the technical skill required to achieve such clarity and depth on paper.
