A formal portrait of M. P. Zhdanovich in military uniform by the Russian artist Pavel Fedotov, captured with subtle light and precise detail.
Pavel Fedotov, a central figure in the development of Russian genre painting, produced this portrait during his early career. While he is often associated with satirical scenes of military and domestic life, his portraiture demonstrates a keen ability to capture the psychological state of his subjects. In this work, the sitter, M. P. Zhdanovich, is depicted in a formal military uniform. The composition focuses on the young man, whose expression is one of quiet contemplation.
Fedotov uses a restrained colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and the dark fabric of the uniform, which allows the subtle light on the sitter's face to draw the viewer's attention. The brushwork is precise, reflecting the artist's academic training and his attention to the textures of the epaulettes and the fabric of the tunic. The background remains indistinct, a common technique in nineteenth-century portraiture to ensure the subject remains the sole focus of the composition.
This portrait provides insight into the social milieu of the Russian officer class during the mid-nineteenth century. Fedotov's approach to the human figure is grounded in observation, avoiding the overly idealised depictions common in the period. The work displays the artist's technical proficiency before he shifted his focus toward the narrative genre paintings that defined his later career. As a museum-grade print, this piece offers a clear view of Fedotov's handling of light and shadow, preserving the tonal balance of the original oil painting. It is a representative example of the portraiture style that existed alongside the emerging realist movement in Russia.
