A portrait of a woman by French Impressionist painter Berthe Morisot, painted in 1891. The loose brushwork and muted palette are characteristic of her style.
Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was a French painter and a member of the circle of painters in Paris who became known as the Impressionists. She was described by Gustave Geffroy in 1894 as one of "les trois grandes dames" of Impressionism alongside Marie Bracquemond and Mary Cassatt. Morisot was independently wealthy and able to pursue her artistic endeavours without the need for commercial success. She married Eugène Manet, brother of Édouard Manet, in 1874 and frequently used family members as models. This oil on canvas portrait from 1891 depicts a woman with auburn hair, wearing a red cloak and a white collar. The brushwork is loose and expressive, typical of Morisot's Impressionist style. The background is indistinct, drawing attention to the sitter's face and upper body. The painting is signed "Morisot" and inscribed "Paris 91" in the lower right corner.
