This oil on canvas portrait is attributed to Mary Stevenson Cassatt, an American painter and printmaker who spent most of her adult life in France. Cassatt (1844-1926) is known for her depictions of women, both in domestic settings and in scenes of modern life. She was one of only three women to exhibit with the Impressionist group in Paris. This work presents a woman with dark hair, her gaze directed slightly off to the side. She wears a simple white garment with a loosely draped red shawl or robe. The background is a dark, indistinct reddish-brown. The brushwork is loose and expressive, typical of Impressionist painting, with visible strokes that capture the light and form of the subject. The colour palette is restrained, focusing on the contrast between the pale skin tones and the darker background and clothing.
