A 1630 portrait by Frans Hals depicting a woman in formal Dutch attire, noted for its precise rendering of lace and fabric textures.
This portrait by Frans Hals, dated 1630, depicts a woman identified as Aeltje Dircksdr. Pater. The subject is presented in a three-quarter view, typical of the formal portraiture commissioned by the Dutch merchant class during the seventeenth century. Hals captures the sitter with a directness that avoids excessive idealisation, focusing instead on the textures of her attire and the subtle expression on her face.
The sitter wears a large, stiffened millstone collar, a fashion statement that signals her social standing and wealth. Her black dress is constructed from heavy fabric, contrasted by the delicate lace at her wrists and the intricate gold embroidery visible on her bodice. Hals employs his characteristic brushwork here, using loose, confident strokes to define the lace and the play of light across the fabric. The background is a neutral, dark tone, which pushes the figure forward and ensures the viewer focuses on the sitter's features and the details of her costume.
In the upper left corner, the inscription 'AETAT SVAE 41' and 'AN 1630' provides the sitter's age and the date of the work. This inclusion was a common practice in Dutch portraiture, providing a clear record of the subject at a specific moment in time. The painting demonstrates the artist's ability to balance formal requirements with a sense of individual presence. The composition is structured around the circular form of the collar, which frames the face and draws the eye to the sitter's gaze. This work remains a clear example of the technical skill and observational power that defined the portraiture of the Dutch Golden Age.
