A late-career portrait by Vasily Surikov, featuring a woman in profile against a textured golden-yellow background.
Vasily Surikov, a painter associated with the Peredvizhniki movement, is primarily recognised for his large-scale historical compositions. This portrait offers a departure from his monumental works, focusing instead on the intimate study of a single subject. The sitter is depicted in profile, a classic compositional choice that directs the viewer's attention to the contours of the face and the texture of the hair.
The background consists of a textured, golden-yellow wash, which provides a warm contrast to the cooler tones of the subject's attire. Surikov employs a loose, painterly technique, visible in the application of pigment across the canvas. The brushwork is particularly evident in the rendering of the fabric, where short, directional strokes suggest the weight and folds of the garment. A small, decorative floral element at the collar adds a touch of detail to the otherwise restrained composition.
Surikov's approach to portraiture often involved capturing the psychological state of the sitter through subtle shifts in light and shadow. In this piece, the soft illumination highlights the profile, creating a sense of quiet contemplation. The artist's signature and the date, 1911, are visible in the upper left corner, placing this work in the later period of his career. This portrait demonstrates his ability to balance technical precision with a more spontaneous, expressive application of paint, moving away from the rigid academic standards of the time. The work remains a fine example of his late-career interest in the human figure, stripped of the complex historical narratives that defined his earlier output.
