A detailed seventeenth-century portrait of a young man, rendered in watercolour with a focus on period fashion and accessories.
This portrait by Moses ter Borch captures a young man in the fashion of the mid-seventeenth century. The subject wears a dark doublet with white sleeves, a lace cravat, and a distinctive orange sash tied at the waist. He holds a walking stick in his left hand, while his right hand rests on his hip in a pose of casual confidence. The artist employs a delicate watercolour technique, focusing on the texture of the lace and the fall of the subject's long, fair hair. A small coat of arms is positioned in the upper left corner, suggesting the subject's status or family affiliation.
Moses ter Borch was a member of a prominent family of painters from Zwolle. His career was brief, as he died at the age of twenty-two. Despite his short life, he produced a significant number of drawings and watercolours that document the dress and social customs of his time. His work often displays a keen eye for detail, particularly in the rendering of textiles and personal accessories. This piece is part of a larger collection of his drawings, which provide insight into the artistic practices within the Ter Borch household. The composition is clean and direct, typical of the portrait studies produced by the artist during his formative years. The use of colour is restrained, allowing the viewer to focus on the subject's features and the specific details of his attire. The work remains a clear example of the portraiture traditions prevalent in the Dutch Republic during the seventeenth century.
