A 1506 portrait by Venetian master Giorgione, featuring a woman framed by laurel leaves, rendered with the soft, atmospheric light typical of the High Renaissance.
Painted in 1506, this work by the Venetian master Giorgione represents a shift in portraiture during the High Renaissance. The subject, often identified as Laura, is depicted in a three-quarter view against a dark background, framed by the foliage of a laurel bush. The laurel serves as a symbolic reference to the name Laura, while also functioning as a visual device to separate the figure from the void behind her.
The woman wears a fur-lined cloak that is partially open, revealing a white chemise beneath. Her expression is calm, with her gaze directed away from the viewer. Giorgione employs the technique of sfumato, which softens the transitions between colours and tones, creating a sense of atmospheric depth around the figure. The handling of the fur and the fabric demonstrates the artist's focus on texture and the play of light across different surfaces.
This painting is notable for its poetic quality, a characteristic often associated with Giorgione's output. Unlike the rigid, formal portraits common in the period, this image possesses a sense of immediacy and human presence. The inclusion of the laurel branches adds a layer of classical allusion, connecting the sitter to the tradition of poetry and virtue. The composition is balanced, with the verticality of the leaves echoing the posture of the woman. It remains a primary example of the Venetian school's interest in colour and mood over the strict linear precision found in contemporary Florentine works. The painting is currently held in the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna.
