A refined eighteenth-century etching by Giovanni Cattini, after a design by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta, depicting the profile of Abbati Angelo Maria Labia.
This print is an etching and engraving by the Venetian artist Giovanni Cattini, based on a design by the painter Giovanni Battista Piazzetta. The work depicts a double portrait, showing the profile of Abbati Angelo Maria Labia alongside a female figure. The composition reflects the characteristic style of the Venetian school during the mid-eighteenth century, where dramatic lighting and soft modelling of facial features were common.
Cattini, a skilled printmaker, captures the tonal variations of Piazzetta's original drawing through precise cross-hatching and line work. The figures are positioned in a close, intimate arrangement, with the female figure leaning slightly towards the Abbati. The use of light creates a sense of volume, particularly on the faces and the folds of the clothing. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the base, dedicating the work to the subject, follows the conventions of eighteenth-century portrait prints, which often served as tokens of esteem or patronage.
The print demonstrates the technical proficiency required to translate the painterly qualities of Piazzetta into the medium of engraving. The contrast between the dark, textured fabric of the Abbati's garment and the lighter, smoother rendering of the skin tones provides a balanced visual experience. This piece offers a glimpse into the artistic circles of Venice, where painters and printmakers collaborated to disseminate portraits of notable figures. It is a fine example of the reproductive printmaking tradition that allowed the work of masters like Piazzetta to reach a wider audience beyond the immediate circle of their patrons.
