The painting depicts Adele Bloch-Bauer, a wealthy Viennese socialite and patron of the arts. It was commissioned by her husband, Ferdinand Bloch-Bauer, a Jewish banker and industrialist. The portrait is dominated by gold, giving it a shimmering, almost ethereal quality. Adele is depicted in a frontal pose, her hands clasped in front of her. Her dress and the background are covered in a dense array of geometric and organic motifs, including eyes, spirals, and triangles.
