A refined eighteenth-century portrait study in black and red chalk by the Dutch artist Nicolaes Muys, capturing the likeness of Aernout van Beeftingh.
This portrait study by Nicolaes Muys captures Aernout van Beeftingh with the precision characteristic of late eighteenth-century Dutch draughtsmanship. Muys, a painter and engraver based in Rotterdam, produced numerous portraits that document the appearance of the local bourgeoisie during this period. The work employs a combination of black and red chalk, a technique favoured by artists of the era for its ability to render subtle skin tones and soft textures alongside firm structural lines.
The subject is depicted in a three-quarter view, wearing a coat with a prominent collar and a wig styled in the fashion of the late 1700s. Muys focuses on the facial features, using delicate hatching to define the contours of the jaw and the bridge of the nose. The application of red chalk on the cheeks and lips provides a naturalistic warmth to the otherwise monochrome palette. The background remains largely untouched, which draws the viewer's attention to the sitter's expression and the careful observation of his features.
As a preparatory study or a finished drawing intended for a private collection, this piece offers a glimpse into the social history of the Netherlands. The portrait is part of a broader series documenting the Van Beeftingh family, reflecting the common practice of commissioning works to record family lineage. The restraint in the composition and the focus on individual character are typical of the Dutch portrait tradition, which prioritised clarity and likeness. This fine art print preserves the texture of the original paper and the nuanced layering of the chalk, allowing for a clear view of the artist's hand and the specific marks made during the creative process.
