A psychological portrait of the Russian philosopher Alexander Herzen, painted by Nikolai Ge in 1867 during the subject's exile in Florence.
Nikolai Ge painted this portrait of the Russian writer and philosopher Alexander Herzen in 1867. The work captures the subject in Florence, where Herzen lived in exile. Ge, a member of the Peredvizhniki movement, focused on psychological realism in his portraiture. He avoids idealisation, choosing instead to present the subject with a direct, unvarnished gaze.
The composition is contained within an oval frame, which directs attention to the face of the sitter. Herzen is depicted with a grey beard and thinning hair, his expression appearing weary yet resolute. The dark, muted tones of his clothing merge with the shadowed background, creating a sense of isolation. This choice of palette emphasises the illumination on his forehead and eyes, which are the primary areas of focus. The brushwork is loose and expressive, characteristic of Ge's approach to capturing the inner state of his subjects rather than merely their physical likeness.
Herzen was a figure of significant intellectual weight in nineteenth-century Russia, known for his radical political views and his critique of the tsarist regime. Ge's portrait reflects the gravity of this life in exile. The painting is held in the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. It remains a primary example of the Russian realist tradition, which sought to document the human condition through honest observation. The print captures the texture of the original oil paint, allowing for a close study of Ge's technique and the sombre atmosphere he created for this historical figure.
