A formal eighteenth-century portrait of Alexander Khrapovitsky by the Russian master Dmitry Levitzky.
Dmitry Levitzky was a prominent figure in eighteenth-century Russian portraiture. This work depicts Alexander Khrapovitsky, a notable civil servant and secretary to Catherine the Great. Levitzky captures the subject in a three-quarter view, a standard compositional choice for the period that allows for a focus on the sitter's facial expression and posture.
The artist employs a restrained palette, typical of his approach to formal portraiture. The dark, atmospheric background ensures that the subject remains the primary focus. Khrapovitsky is dressed in the fashion of the late eighteenth century, featuring a coat with a contrasting collar and a lace cravat. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the fabric textures and the soft modelling of the face. Levitzky avoids excessive ornamentation, preferring to convey the status of the sitter through subtle details and a dignified pose.
Levitzky received his training in Saint Petersburg and later refined his technique through observation of European portrait traditions. His ability to balance formal requirements with a sense of individual character made him a preferred artist for the Russian nobility. This portrait demonstrates his technical proficiency in oil paint, specifically in the handling of light and shadow to create volume. The work provides a clear example of the aesthetic values prevalent in the Russian court during the reign of Catherine the Great, where clarity and psychological observation were highly regarded. The print captures these nuances, offering a clear view of the original canvas's texture and tonal range.
