A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Johann Pfann, featuring a portrait of the Nuremberg merchant Ambrosius Bosch surrounded by heraldic motifs.
This engraving by Johann Pfann depicts Ambrosius Bosch, a merchant and member of the Nuremberg Great Council. The portrait follows the conventions of seventeenth-century German commemorative prints, framing the subject within an oval cartouche. Bosch is shown in three-quarter profile, wearing a fur-lined garment and a cap, holding a small object in his right hand. The precision of the line work, particularly in the rendering of the beard and the texture of the clothing, demonstrates the technical skill typical of Nuremberg printmakers during this period.
The composition includes four heraldic shields in the corners, which identify the family lineages associated with the subject. The lower section contains a detailed inscription in German, providing biographical information about Bosch, including his birth in Dünkelspühl in 1503, his marriage to Margaretha Schlüsselbergerin, and his death in Nuremberg in 1557. This text serves as a record of his life and social standing within the city.
Johann Pfann was active in Nuremberg as an engraver and publisher. His work often focused on portraits of local figures and historical subjects, contributing to the visual documentation of the city's elite. The use of cross-hatching to create depth and shadow within the oval frame provides a sense of volume to the figure, while the surrounding decorative elements maintain a balanced, formal aesthetic. This print is a characteristic example of the commemorative portraiture produced for private collections and family archives in the early modern era. It captures the gravity and status expected of a council member, presented with the clarity and attention to detail that defined the printmaking traditions of the time.
