A comparative study of a 19th-century portrait, showing the raw albumen print alongside the final retouched version.
This archival document provides a clear demonstration of nineteenth-century photographic retouching techniques. The composition presents two versions of the same portrait side by side, mounted on a light blue card. The left side, labelled 'cliché sans retouche', shows the raw photographic negative print, which appears faint and lacking in tonal contrast. The right side, labelled 'cliché retouché', displays the final product after the photographer has applied manual adjustments to the surface.
Retouching was a standard practice in early portrait studios to correct imperfections in the negative or to enhance the sitter's features. By using graphite or ink directly on the print, photographers could smooth out skin textures, define facial features, and adjust the lighting balance. In this instance, the retouched image exhibits a much stronger presence, with the beard and facial structure appearing more defined against the background. The subject is a man with a full, long beard, captured in a classic oval format typical of the carte-de-visite or cabinet card era.
This piece serves as a technical record of the labour involved in early portraiture. It reveals the transition from the mechanical process of capturing light to the artistic intervention required to produce a finished portrait. The contrast between the two images allows the viewer to observe the specific areas where the photographer focused their efforts, such as the eyes, the contours of the cheeks, and the volume of the hair. P. Piquepé, a photographer active in Paris during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, operated a studio that catered to the demand for high-quality portraiture. This specific example is often found in collections documenting the history of photographic processes, offering a rare glimpse into the workshop practices of the period.
