This period is recognised for the emergence of Fauvism, a movement defined by the use of non-naturalistic colour and expressive brushwork. Matisse rejects traditional modelling, opting instead for a palette that prioritises emotional impact over anatomical accuracy.
The composition is direct, focusing on the subject's head and shoulders against a simplified background. The face is constructed from distinct patches of colour, with greens and oranges applied in thick, visible strokes. These hues do not represent skin tone in a conventional sense, but rather the play of light and shadow across the features.
