A 1662 engraving by Guillaume Vallet, depicting the Italian painter Andrea Sacchi within a formal, classical frame.
This engraving by Guillaume Vallet depicts the Italian painter Andrea Sacchi. Produced in 1662, the work captures the subject within a formal, architectural frame. Vallet, a French engraver who spent significant time in Rome, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of the burin. The portrait is based on a design by Carlo Maratti, a contemporary of Sacchi, which is noted in the inscription at the base of the print.
The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture. Sacchi is presented in an oval medallion, a format common for commemorative prints of artists and scholars. The frame is decorated with sphinx-like figures and classical motifs, which provide a sense of stability and historical weight to the image. The artist's name, 'ANDREAS SACCHI ROM.', is clearly inscribed on the plinth below, identifying the subject as a Roman figure of note.
Vallet employs cross-hatching and varied line weights to model the features of the sitter and the texture of his clothing. The lighting is directed to focus on the face, creating a sense of presence. The surrounding decorative elements are rendered with a flatter, more schematic approach, ensuring the viewer's attention remains on the portrait itself. This print offers a clear example of the collaborative nature of printmaking during the Baroque period, where painters and engravers worked in tandem to disseminate the likenesses of notable figures across Europe. The work remains a primary visual record of Sacchi, who was a significant painter of the Roman High Baroque style, known for his classicising approach to composition and his influence on younger artists like Maratti.
