A formal 1621 engraving by Lucas Kilian depicting August, Count Palatine of Sulzbach, captured in fine detail with a traditional lace ruff.
This engraving by Lucas Kilian depicts August, Count Palatine of Sulzbach, in a formal bust-length portrait. Kilian, a skilled printmaker from Augsburg, utilised the burin to achieve precise tonal variations and textures. The subject is presented within an oval frame, a common convention for seventeenth-century portraiture, which allows for the inclusion of a Latin inscription detailing his titles and lineage.
August is shown wearing a large, elaborate lace ruff, which was a standard element of aristocratic fashion during this period. The texture of the lace is rendered with fine, rhythmic lines that contrast with the darker, more solid shading of his doublet. His expression is composed, with a direct gaze directed toward the viewer. The artist employs cross-hatching to model the facial features and the contours of the ruff, creating a sense of volume and depth within the two-dimensional medium.
Below the oval portrait, a cartouche contains a Latin poem, which serves to honour the subject and acknowledge the artist's dedication. The inclusion of such text was typical for commemorative prints of the era, providing context regarding the sitter's status and public persona. The work reflects the technical proficiency of the Augsburg school of printmaking, where Kilian was a central figure. His ability to capture the likeness and social standing of his subjects made him a sought-after engraver for the nobility and clergy of the Holy Roman Empire. This print offers a clear example of the formal portraiture style that defined the visual culture of the early seventeenth century, prioritising clarity, heraldic precision, and the display of status through costume and composition.
