A detailed engraving by Nicolas Edelinck after Raphael's portrait of the diplomat Baldassare Castiglione, showcasing precise line work and historical character.
This fine engraving by Nicolas Edelinck reproduces the famous portrait of the Italian diplomat and author Baldassare Castiglione, originally painted by Raphael in the early sixteenth century. Edelinck, a member of a prominent family of engravers, demonstrates technical precision in his translation of the painted original into the medium of copperplate engraving. The work captures the subject in a three-quarter view, wearing the dark, fur-trimmed garments characteristic of the period.
The composition relies on the subtle interplay of light and shadow to define the form of the sitter. Edelinck employs a system of cross-hatching and varied line weights to replicate the textures of the velvet doublet and the soft fur collar. The gaze of the subject remains fixed on the viewer, maintaining the psychological presence found in Raphael's original work. The inscription at the base of the print identifies the source as the painting held in the Cabinet du Roy, providing historical context for the provenance of the image during the eighteenth century.
As a reproductive print, this piece reflects the practice of disseminating masterworks through engraving, allowing wider access to iconic portraits. The clarity of the lines and the balanced tonal range demonstrate the high standards of French printmaking during the period. The work is presented with its original plate marks and descriptive text, preserving the character of the historical document. This print offers a clear view of the sartorial details and the dignified posture of the Renaissance courtier, rendered with the disciplined hand of a master engraver.
