This portrait depicts the celebrated haiku poet Matsuo Basho. Attributed to the artist Ichijun, who was active during the 18th century, the work captures the poet in a contemplative, informal manner. The composition relies on the economy of the brush, a hallmark of the literati tradition in Japanese art. Basho is shown in a three-quarter view, his expression suggesting a quiet, observant nature. His attire is rendered with fluid, dark ink washes, contrasting with the lighter, more delicate treatment of the surrounding foliage.
