A 1617 engraving by Lucas Kilian depicting the theologian Bernhard Ludwig Löher, featuring formal portraiture and period typography.
This engraving by Lucas Kilian depicts Bernhard Ludwig Löher, a theologian and court preacher, at the age of thirty-seven. Produced in 1617, the work exemplifies the technical precision of early seventeenth-century German printmaking. Kilian, a member of a prominent family of engravers based in Augsburg, utilised fine hatching and cross-hatching to model the subject's features and the texture of his clerical attire.
The composition follows the conventions of formal portraiture from the period. Löher is presented in a bust-length format, wearing a traditional ruff collar and dark robes. He holds a small book, a common attribute for scholars and clergy, which denotes his intellectual and religious vocation. The portrait is framed by a decorative border, a common feature in printed broadsides of the era, which serves to contain the text.
Above the portrait, the inscription identifies the sitter and his titles, while the lower section includes Latin verses and a citation from Psalm 55, verse 23. These elements provide context regarding the subject's social and professional standing within the Württemberg court. The print reflects the standard of professional portraiture intended for distribution among the educated classes of the time. The clarity of the lines and the balanced arrangement of text and image demonstrate Kilian's skill in combining typographic elements with portraiture. This piece offers a view into the visual culture of the German Baroque, where printed portraits functioned as both personal records and public statements of status and belief.
