A formal 1749 engraving by Jacques Nicolas Tardieu depicting the French painter Bon de Boullongne, based on an original portrait by Gilles Allou.
This engraving by Jacques Nicolas Tardieu depicts the French painter Bon de Boullongne. The work was produced in 1749 as Tardieu's reception piece for the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture. It is based on an earlier painting by Gilles Allou, which was created for Allou's own reception into the same institution in 1711.
The composition follows the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture, presenting the subject within a trompe-l'oeil stone oval frame. Boullongne is shown in a relaxed, informal pose, wearing a soft cap and a loose robe, which suggests the attire of an artist in his studio. He holds a palette and a collection of brushes, identifying his profession clearly. The engraving technique demonstrates the precision characteristic of Tardieu, who was a member of a prominent family of engravers in Paris. The cross-hatching and fine lines create a sense of volume in the drapery and texture in the facial features, providing a realistic representation of the sitter.
Bon de Boullongne was a significant figure in the French art world, serving as a Peintre Ordinaire du Roy and a professor at the Académie. The inscription at the base of the print provides biographical details, noting his death in 1717 at the age of sixty-eight. This print serves as a record of the artistic lineage within the French Academy, documenting the appearance of a master painter through the technical skill of a specialist engraver. The monochromatic palette and the formal presentation within the architectural frame reflect the academic standards of the period, prioritising clarity and historical documentation over decorative flourish.
