A precise 1818 engraving by Samuel Amsler depicting the German painter Carl Philipp Fohr, rendered with meticulous line work and classical composition.
This engraving by Samuel Amsler depicts the German painter Carl Philipp Fohr. Executed in 1818, the work captures the subject with a high degree of technical precision, characteristic of Amsler's training and his association with the Nazarene movement. The artist employs a rigorous system of hatching and cross-hatching to model the facial features, hair, and the folds of the subject's clothing. The lines are controlled and deliberate, creating a sense of volume and texture that defines the form against the plain background.
Fohr is shown in a three-quarter view, wearing a beret and a simple collar. His expression is direct, with a gaze that engages the viewer. The inscription at the top provides biographical context, noting his profession as a painter from Heidelberg and his age at the time of the portrait. The composition is focused entirely on the head and shoulders, stripping away extraneous detail to concentrate on the character of the sitter. The print demonstrates the technical skill required for early nineteenth-century engraving, where the artist had to translate the nuances of light and shadow into a series of physical incisions on a metal plate.
Samuel Amsler was known for his ability to reproduce the works of other masters, yet this portrait reveals his capacity for original observation. The work reflects the aesthetic values of the period, which favoured clarity, linear definition, and a return to the stylistic rigour of the Renaissance. By using a monochromatic palette, the artist relies on the interplay of line weight and density to convey the depth of the subject's features. This print remains a clear example of the portraiture traditions prevalent among German artists working in Rome during the early nineteenth century.
